“Ooh-la-la,” Renee calls out.

“What?”

“We have male company with very nicely chiseled – and I mean chiseled – abs and ditto tan.”

I am lying on my back on my beach towel and turn my head to the other side. Sam and Don are coming our way at a leisurely pace. And yes, they have sculpted killer abs. They are wearing shorts, shirts in hands, so no question about why they’re here. It doesn’t look like I’m in an immediate danger.

“How did they know we would be here?” Renee wonders.

“Because I told Sam we were spending a day at the beach,” I say truthfully.

“You saw Sam? You guys have contact?”

“Yeah, sort of,” I say vaguely. “Bumped into him last week.”

“Well, well, and he’s bringing Don…” Renee twists and turns on her towel. “This could be very interesting.”

I turn my head. “What do you mean?”

“Well, for starters, he’s well-built.”

“Are you that shallow?”

Renee shrugs and puts on her sunglasses. “He’s intelligent too.”

“They’re out of our league.”

Renee turns on her belly. “Let’s see about that,” she whispers. “Hello there!”

“Hello, ladies,” Don says good-naturedly.

“Sit down,” Renee says inviting, and motions for the cooler. “And grab yourselves a drink if you like.”

“Thanks,” Don answers, his expression blank. You would never know that he doesn’t drink anymore. Well, not our stuff anyway. He probably brought his own.

Sam kicks off his low All Star sneakers and sits down next to me on the sand. Do I have to offer him a section of my towel?

“We’re good?” he wants to know.

“Yeah, we’re good,” I answer, taking the ear buds from my ear. I search for my glasses.

“We were just planning Laurel’s birthday party,” Renee tells the guys. “She’ll be nineteen this Tuesday.”

Don smiles. “That’s great.”

“Yeah, would you guys like to come? The weather is great, so we’ll throw a garden party. Maybe you can–”

“Renee,” I stop her. “They have other plans on Tuesday.”

Her face sobers. “Really? Too bad, I was kind of hoping you would perform on her birthday?”

Don looks puzzled. “Perform?”

Renee opens the cooler and takes out a beverage. “Yeah, with your band. Chaos,” she clarifies when Don doesn’t react immediately.

“You want Chaos to play on Laurel’s birthday?” Don asks bewildered.

Renee opens the can and takes a long swig. “Yeah, in the garden. That would be so great. Just a few songs. I was looking for a band, but now that we’ve run into you, maybe–”

“A band?” I interrupt Renee again. “You were looking for a band?” I ask in utter shock. “We were going to invite some friends for a drink, that’s all. And Chaos doesn’t perform anymore.”

Renee turns her head. “What? You guys have split up? Why? You’re going solo?”

Don laughs. “No one is going solo, and we were never that serious. Chaos was a great pastime, that’s all.”

“You break my heart,” Renee mutters. “I was a fan.”

“I’m sorry we’ve let you down,” Don grins. “I’ll give you a signed T-shirt, if you like that sort of thing.”

“Yeah, I do, actually.” Her face lightens up. “Have you guys had a farewell gig?”

“No, we haven’t,” Sam answers.
